The Big Read
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The initiative brings together partners across the United States to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to conduct month-long, community-wide reads between September 2009 and June 2010. Organizations selected to participate in the Big Read will each receive a grant ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, financial support to attend an orientation meeting, educational and promotional materials, an Organizer's Guide for developing and managing Big Read activities, inclusion of the organization and activities on the Big Read Web site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative. Approximately four hundred organizations of varying sizes across the country will be selected for this cycle. Applicant organizations must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a division of state, local, or tribal government, or a tax-exempt public library. Eligible applicants include such organizations as literary centers, libraries, museums, colleges and universities, art centers, historical societies, arts councils, tribal governments, humanities councils, literary festivals, and arts organizations. Applicant organizations must partner with a library (if the applicant organization itself is not a library), and must select one of the twenty-seven available book titles or one of the three available poetry books. Application deadline: February 3, 2009.

Edna McConnell Clark Foundation
The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation helps young people, ages 9 to 24, from low-income backgrounds become independent, productive adults in three ways: improving educational skills and academic achievement; preparing for the world of work and making the transition to employment and economic self-sufficiency; and avoiding high-risk behaviors such as drug abuse, violence, and teen pregnancy. Rather than design initiatives or programs itself, the Foundation works to develop and expand a pool of organizations that can serve thousands more youth each year with programs that produce these outcomes. It focuses solely on high-performing organizations and believes that making significant, long-term, financial investments in them (coupled with extra-financial supports) is an efficient and effective way to meet the urgent needs of low-income youth. The Foundation holds itself accountable for significantly increasing the number of low-income young people benefiting from proven services, and for helping to develop stronger, sustainable organizations that serve low-income youth on a significant scale. Recognizing that young people are most at risk when they are not in school or at home, the Foundation focuses primarily on organizations that deliver services and programming outside school hours. Eligible applicants include: stand-alone 501(c)(3) organization with a history of service to young people. Although the foundation is not accepting proposals from individual organizations, it does invite organizations to complete its Youth Organizations Survey. Based on an organization's responses, the foundation will determine whether it should take a closer look at the organization's programs, leadership, and overall operations.

Cultural Support Grants Program
The mission of the Cultural Support Grants Program is to foster excellence and diversity in art and culture for all the people in the State of Florida. Through these grants, the Division encourages a commitment to outreach and educational services to underserved areas and populations and increased access for persons with disabilities. Funded by the Florida Legislature, the program supports non-profit cultural organizations, recurring cultural programs, museums and non-arts organizations. Two types of funding are offered: General Program Support and Specific Projects. Award ceiling: $350,000. Application deadline: December 15, 2008.

Resources for Tough Economy

I've recently received emails from people looking for grants that aren't, well, typical. By and large, grants are for non-profit organizations. But it seems that everyone is trying to make ends meet, and it is getting harder and harder, so people are looking for creative solutions. (I've even published a book of my short stories in addition to Fifty Funders and Simply: Grant Writing - see sidebar.)

While I'm always glad to help when I can, I've found myself out of options or at least not the best resource for some who have contacted me. So I decided to put together this rather unusual list.

1. Grants for Individuals

If you are an individual artist, you may be in luck. Grants do exist to assist artists (dancers, writers, visual artists, musicians), but most of these go to established artists with a body of work and positive reviews.

Otherwise, if you are looking for assistance due to a medical condition, you need to contact your church, your commissioner, possibly your consulate if you are from or in another country, or your human resources director if you work for a large company. These options may lead to a fundraiser on your behalf or some discretionary funds. Another option is the local branch of the national organization that deals with a particular type of condition (American Cancer Society, for instance), which may be able to provide additional information.

2. Scholarships

Many people are changing fields, and some may have to go back to school. The best place to start is the Financial Aid office of the school you want to attend. Get to know this staff well, ask about Pell Grants, grants for your particular course of study, loans, work options (part-time, on campus, co-op, etc.), fellowships. Staff will help advise you, may be able to help fill out applications, and they will have you in mind for anything that comes along.

3. Small Business (other than non-profit)

The Small Business Administration does not offer grants for small businesses, despite all those ads on television. However, if you own a small research or technological firm, search http://www.sbir.gov/ to find competitive bid options for small businesses. The Small Business Administration does offer loans, training, and other types of assistance for small businesses. You may also sometimes find local grants such as Mom and Pop grants offered through your local commissioners. Rare grants exist for women owned businesses, minority owned businesses, or limited types of industries. Companies in the education field might try the Department of Education.

Description: The WHO Foundation: Women Helping Others(R) nationally supports grass-roots charities serving the overlooked needs of women and children. Grants are provided to organizations serving women and/or children in the United States and Puerto Rico. Specific projects and programs addressing health, education, and social-service needs are the foundation's priority.
Who May Apply: In order to qualify for funding, an organization must have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status through the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Funding will be considered for grass-roots charities with:
a total organization budget of $2 million or less
government funding of less than 30% of income
United Way funding of less than 30% of income
salaries/wages and benefits not more than 50% of budget.

Description: This grant program seeks to develop or expand projects that support the development of literacy skills for adult primary caregivers and their children. Family literacy programs funded through this opportunity must include all of the following components:
reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers
literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children
intergenerational activities where parents/primary caregivers and children come together to learn and read.
Programs can also include additional components such as parent support groups, parent involvement, home visits, and job training.

The Bernice Barbour Foundation is a private charity established by the
late Bernice Wall Barbour. It is a trust to be used for preservation,
care, and prevention of cruelty to animals in the United States. Final
determination of grant applicant funding is the sole discretion of the
Foundation Trustees.
Organization requirements
501(c)(3) for at least one year prior to August 10, 2008
Benefit animals in the United States
No governmental agencies (local, county, state or federal)
All criteria must have been met for at least one year
Sanctuaries which do not own their land and facility and do not adopt out or release more animals than are residents for more than one year will not
be considered
Provide the animal with the opportunity to lead a natural life and then
observe when it properly
Should come to an end

Hands-on animal care projects are of particular interest

· All animals must be spayed/neutered/castrated prior to adoption

Baltimore, MD - July 21, 2008 - Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation announces a major expansion of USArtists International (USAI) effective immediately. The Foundation received grants of $500,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and $100,000 from the Trust for Mutual Understanding in support of USAI. A program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, USAI is the only national initiative solely dedicated to promoting the work of American performing artists abroad. Formerly limited to supporting dance and music ensembles invited to perform at international festivals in Europe, USAI will now encompass festivals anywhere in the world outside the United States. The program will also be open to support American theater companies and solo performances in all performing arts d isciplines.

AARP Foundation Women's Scholarship Program
The AARP Foundation has announced its second annual Women's Scholarship Program. The scholarships will provide funds to women 40+ who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families. The AARP Foundation Women's Scholarship Program is available to eligible individuals with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources. To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must: be female age 40 or over (as of August 31, 2008); be able to demonstrate financial need; and be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary school or training program within 6 months of the scholarship award date. Priority consideration is given to women in three categories: women raising children of another family member (such as grandparents raising grandchildren, or those raising siblings or nieces/nephews); women who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time; and women in dead end jobs (those with no opportunity for advancement, low pay and lacking either health or retirement benefits). Application deadline: August 22, 2008.

Women’s Fund needs your help to continue funding programs for women and girls.

Women’s Fund has recently attracted some incredible opportunities to bring additional national funding to programs for women and girls in Miami-Dade, but we need support from the community to make this happen! We are especially in need of donations in the $1,000, $500, $250 and $100 levels. The Catalyst Fund for Reproductive Justice: Women’s Fund was recently selected by the Tides Foundation out of 800 foundations from around the country to receive a $100,000 matching grant for women of color-led organizations working on issues such as (but not limited to): comprehensive sex education; the impacts of environmental toxins on reproductive health; violence against women; increasing access to quality, affordable, culturally and linguistically appropriate health care; increasing access for LBT communities; parenting rights; midwifery and birthing rights; access to contraception or termination;, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment; and regulation of new genetic and reproductive technologies.

The Portrait of Women and Girls in Miami-Dade County: Women’s Fund is producing three groundbreaking research reports that will document and analyze the lives of women and girls in Miami-Dade County and provide policy recommendations for elected officials, business leaders and local and national funders.

2009 Community Grantmaking: Women’s Fund grant-making address the root causes of inequality and lack of opportunity, safety, and self-determination for women and girls in Miami-Dade. In addition to providing funds to the organizations that do this work, Women’s Fund also provides their non-profit professionals with the resources, expertise and training they need to succeed. The Request For Proposals for 2009 grants was released on June 30th and we seek to fund more than $500,000 in grants in 2009 with your support.

Grant offers educators an opportunity to communicate their instructional concepts through innovative online technologies. The program will donate the services of Stage 2 Studios, LLC to the production of an interactive web-based educational module (or modules) valued between $10,000 and $20,000.

Furthermore Program Offers Grants in Nonfiction Publishing

An initiative of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the Furthermore program supports nonfiction book publishing about the city; natural and historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public issues.

The program seeks work that appeals to an informed general audience; gives evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production; promises a reasonable shelf life; might not otherwise achieve top quality or even come into being; and "represents a contribution without which we would be the poorer."

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations. Grant recipients have included civic and academic institutions, museums, independent and university presses, and professional societies. Trade publishers and public agencies may apply for grants in partnership with an eligible nonprofit sponsor. Applications from individuals are not accepted.

Grants range from $500 to approximately $15,000 each and may support writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography, illustration, and printing and binding.
