WHO Foundation
Application Deadline: Grant applications must be at the foundation by the second Tuesday of September each year (September 9, 2008).

Description: The WHO Foundation: Women Helping Others(R) nationally supports grass-roots charities serving the overlooked needs of women and children. Grants are provided to organizations serving women and/or children in the United States and Puerto Rico. Specific projects and programs addressing health, education, and social-service needs are the foundation's priority.
Who May Apply: In order to qualify for funding, an organization must have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status through the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Funding will be considered for grass-roots charities with:
a total organization budget of $2 million or less
government funding of less than 30% of income
United Way funding of less than 30% of income
salaries/wages and benefits not more than 50% of budget.

The Barbara Bush Foundation For Family Literacy -- National Grant Program
Application Deadline: September 5, 2008
Description: This grant program seeks to develop or expand projects that support the development of literacy skills for adult primary caregivers and their children. Family literacy programs funded through this opportunity must include all of the following components:
reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers
literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children
intergenerational activities where parents/primary caregivers and children come together to learn and read.
Programs can also include additional components such as parent support groups, parent involvement, home visits, and job training.
Funding Amount: Up to $65,000 each
Who May Apply: Organizations with nonprofit or public status

BJ's Charitable Foundation -- Grants for Community Programs
Application Deadline: Quarterly, next deadline is October 6, 2008
Description: The goal of this funding program is to enhance and enrich community programs that primarily benefit children and families. The majority of grants support organizations that:
promote the safety, security, and well-being of children and families
deliver education and health programs
provide community-service opportunities
aid in hunger and disaster relief.
Funding Amount: Amount is unspecified

AARP Foundation Women's Scholarship Program
The AARP Foundation has announced its second annual Women's Scholarship Program. The scholarships will provide funds to women 40+ who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families. The AARP Foundation Women's Scholarship Program is available to eligible individuals with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources. To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must: be female age 40 or over (as of August 31, 2008); be able to demonstrate financial need; and be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary school or training program within 6 months of the scholarship award date. Priority consideration is given to women in three categories: women raising children of another family member (such as grandparents raising grandchildren, or those raising siblings or nieces/nephews); women who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time; and women in dead end jobs (those with no opportunity for advancement, low pay and lacking either health or retirement benefits). Application deadline: August 22, 2008.

Women’s Fund needs your help to continue funding programs for women and girls.

Women’s Fund has recently attracted some incredible opportunities to bring additional national funding to programs for women and girls in Miami-Dade, but we need support from the community to make this happen! We are especially in need of donations in the $1,000, $500, $250 and $100 levels. Donations can be made quickly and easily using our online secure server and can be structured monthly, quarterly or annually.

Here are the three biggest programs that your funding will support:

The Catalyst Fund for Reproductive Justice: Women’s Fund was recently selected by the Tides Foundation out of 800 foundations from around the country to receive a $100,000 matching grant for women of color-led organizations working on issues such as (but not limited to): comprehensive sex education; the impacts of environmental toxins on reproductive health; violence against women; increasing access to quality, affordable, culturally and linguistically appropriate health care; increasing access for LBT communities; parenting rights; midwifery and birthing rights; access to contraception or termination;, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment; and regulation of new genetic and reproductive technologies.

The Portrait of Women and Girls in Miami-Dade County: Women’s Fund is producing three groundbreaking research reports that will document and analyze the lives of women and girls in Miami-Dade County and provide policy recommendations for elected officials, business leaders and local and national funders.

2009 Community Grantmaking: Women’s Fund grant-making address the root causes of inequality and lack of opportunity, safety, and self-determination for women and girls in Miami-Dade. In addition to providing funds to the organizations that do this work, Women’s Fund also provides their non-profit professionals with the resources, expertise and training they need to succeed. The Request For Proposals for 2009 grants was released on June 30th and we seek to fund more than $500,000 in grants in 2009 with your support.
