"The full day program is designed to take all the mystery out of using social media for fundraising success," says Dr. Stephen L. Goldstein, one of the event organizers. "So many people in nonprofits hear all the buzz about using social media, and they genuinely want to get on board. But they don't know where to start. And while they're waiting on the sidelines and missing opportunities, others are actually raising money. We've designed the conference to give every participant a solid grounding—from the basics to more sophisticated uses of social media."

Katya Andresen of Network for Good (Washington, D.C.) lays the groundwork for the program. She opens the conference presenting "What to do before you even think of tweeting: The 11 steps to success with social networking and the six most miserable mistakes of social marketing." Skip Kimpel, author of the forthcoming Social Networking for Nonprofits: Making it work and making it matter, will take participants through a "social networking boot camp"—giving the nuts and bolts of venues from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to others. After that, he'll reveal his formulas for creating a social networking fundraising strategy. Peter Panepento of The Chronicle of Philanthropy will discuss a number of case studies, proving that nonprofits are using social media for fundraising—with success. Social media consultant Brian Ross Lee will reveal ways to take the guesswork out of using social media by showing how to monitor nonprofits' success with social media through Google analytics and other programs. And finally, Dr. Stephen L. Goldstein, consultant and author of 30 Days to Successful Fundraising and www.fundraisingguru.blogspot.com, will present "Social media and high tech fail without high touch: How to turn the 7 expectations of social media users into dollars!"

New Task Force on the Performing and Visual Arts in Miami-Dade County
The Board of County Commissioners created a new Task Force on the Performing and Visual Arts in Miami-Dade County to provide suggestions to help sustain the cultural community.

The Task Force’s first meeting for public input will focus on our community’s Major Cultural Institutions and Large Cultural Organizations and is scheduled for Wednesday, August 26 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Miami Science Museum Auditorium, 3280 South Miami Avenue.

The Task Force is being chaired by Adolfo Henriques (who also serves as the chair of the Cultural Affairs Council). It will collect ideas and recommendations to accomplish this work by November 2009. We also will send you the notice of a future meeting to invite participation from medium-sized, small and grassroots cultural organizations. Members of the public are welcome to attend all meetings.

Organizations and individuals are encouraged to submit written testimony that addresses the key issues being looked at by the Task Force. Please click on Task Force Survey to provide this information.

Participants in the Task Force’s work should focus ideas and suggestions on these central issues facing Miami-Dade’s cultural community, including

Factors affecting the sustainability of cultural organizations;
Trends regarding public and private funders of the arts;
Consolidation and collaboration strategies; and
Availability and usage of facilities for the arts.

Arts Grants in Crisis in Miami

Many articles and emails have recently documented the crisis in the arts for Miami-Dade County, with the Commission considering elimination of all grants to 400 organizations.

We have long appreciated the tremendous support given by the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs, undoubtedly one of the best such departments in the country. Without this funding, many organizations that we all know and love will not be able to continue providing their important programs, affecting artists, administrators, patrons, and perhaps most importantly children served by education, outreach, afterschool and summer programs.

If you can, write your Commissioner to ask for continued funding for the Arts in Miami-Dade. I will continue to update as news is released.

Hello All,
I am sure you are all aware of the Economic Stimulus Package that was passed by Congress last month. This package included a $50 million allocation to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the Arts and American Recovery Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The NEA has established a grant program to distribute $30 million and $20 million is going directly to state and regional arts agencies. The Division anticipates receiving approximately $393,000 of the $20 million to disperse to Florida arts organizations.
We do not have many firm answers for how this application process will work right now, but there are a few important points that I would like to make sure that you all are aware of. Please keep in mind that we will make every effort to keep you all informed as we get new information.
Please forgive the bullets, but I want to make sure these points are clear to all of you:
The Division must submit an application to the NEA by March 13th detailing the program that we will use to award the $393,000 allocation. This program is currently in development. Once our application is reviewed and approved by the NEA we will be able to give you more information about the process the field will use to apply and a timeline for implementation.
The focus of all funds in the entire $50 million allocation must be on job retention and job preservation. If you are considering applying for any of these funds this is what your application must focus on.
There are two ways that you may access the $50 million dollar allocation funds. You may only accept one grant award from this stimulus funding – regardless of how many applications you make to the various programs.
By applying to the Division (for a portion of the $393,000). DCA will be publishing program eligibility for these funds as soon as we have it available. We do know that this grant program will occur on a very short timeframe and must be handled on a quick turnaround. We know that you probably have many other questions about this, but the best advice that we can provide you to prepare right now is to look closely at how the current economic climate has affected jobs in your organization and how the loss of these positions has affected your organization in its core mission-driven functions.
By applying to the Southern Arts Federation (for a portion of the $20 million awarded to state and regional arts agencies). SAF is in the process of developing a program for distribution. For information as it becomes available, visit their website http://www.southarts.org
By applying directly to the NEA or Local Arts Agency subgrant of the NEA (you will be applying for a portion of the $30 million that they are dispersing). To apply directly to the NEA you must have received a grant directly from the NEA in the past 4 years. If you have any questions as to whether or not you received an NEA grant in the past four years, please check the NEA website (www.arts.gov). The deadline to apply for this is April 2nd. Please read the guidelines (located at http://www.nea.gov/grants/apply/recovery/) carefully as there are stipulations on eligibility and awards.
Here is what you can do right now to prepare:
Register for a DUNS number (if you don't already have one). DUNS numbers are a unique nine-digit number that identifies your organization. This number is required to apply for these funds. The assignment is free and you can complete the registration process online at this link: http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform/displayHomePage.do;jsessionid=12C5F0D1CA3E3321C207C212AB3034B6. Please note: if you have any questions about the DUNS number, please use the contact listed on the link above for more information. Division staff does not have any expertise on the DUNS number or the registration process; it will expedite your request if you contact them directly.
Register for the Central Contractor Registration (CCR). CCR registration is the primary registrant database for the federal government, and will be another requirement for application to the stimulus funds. To begin the CCR registration process visit this link: http://www.ccr.gov/.

Multi-Arts Production Fund
The Multi-Arts Production (MAP) Fund, a program of Creative Capital, supports original new work in all disciplines and traditions of the live performing arts. The goal of the MAP Fund is "to assist artists who are exploring and challenging the dynamics of live performance within our changing society, thus reflecting our culture's innovation and growing diversity." MAP seeks especially to support work that brings insight and vibrant critique to the issue of cultural difference, be that in class, gender, generation, ethnicity, or tradition. Applications for MAP support must come from organizations based in the United States that have current nonprofit federal tax status. Nonprofit artist-services organizations may apply as fiscal sponsors on behalf of unincorporated artists or ensembles. The MAP Fund supports only artistic projects that contain or will contain a live-performance component. Support may be applied to any phase of a project, up to and including its premiere run. The touring of completed projects is not eligible for MAP funding. MAP is especially interested in providing support to work early in its development. Eligible projects must not have premiered in or outside the United States before September 1, 2009. All proposals are evaluated on the basis of the following criteria, which are weighed equally: the artistic strength of the proposed project; how well a project aligns with the MAP Fund's goal of supporting innovation in all traditions and disciplines of live performance, especially work that brings insight to the issue of cultural difference, be that in class, gender, generation, ethnicity, form, or tradition; and the viability of the project based on applicant's professional capabilities as demonstrated by their proposal. Up to forty awards are given each year. Award amounts range from $10,000 to $45,000. The average award amount is $22,000. Application deadline: January 20, 2009.

Home Depot Foundation Affordable Housing Built Responsibly Grant Program 2009
The Home Depot Foundation, through the Affordable Housing Built Responsibly Grant Program, administers funding to nonprofit organizations whose missions align with the foundation's interests in supporting the production and preservation of affordable, efficient, and healthy housing. The foundation makes grants to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charities in the United States and to charitable organizations in Canada. To better support its mission, the Home Depot Foundation awards most of its grants by directly soliciting proposals from high-performing nonprofit organizations with demonstrated ability to create strong partnerships, impact multiple communities, and leverage grant resources. In order to identify potential future nonprofit partners or respond to unique community revitalization opportunities, a limited amount of unsolicited grant funding is set aside to be awarded through a competitive process. Preference is given to proposals that encourage community involvement and result in the production, preservation, or financing of housing units for low to moderate income families. The most promising proposals will incorporate a number of "green" building design practices. Also, in 2009, preference will be given to proposals that clearly demonstrate how urban forestry strategies will be utilized to create healthier, more vibrant communities. The foundation makes Affordable Housing Built Responsibly grant decisions three times per year and grants typically range from $50,000 to $125,000 each. Letters of inquiry are due on March 1, 2009; and July 1, 2009. The foundation will consider only one proposal from the same organization per calendar year.

The Big Read
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The initiative brings together partners across the United States to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to conduct month-long, community-wide reads between September 2009 and June 2010. Organizations selected to participate in the Big Read will each receive a grant ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, financial support to attend an orientation meeting, educational and promotional materials, an Organizer's Guide for developing and managing Big Read activities, inclusion of the organization and activities on the Big Read Web site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative. Approximately four hundred organizations of varying sizes across the country will be selected for this cycle. Applicant organizations must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a division of state, local, or tribal government, or a tax-exempt public library. Eligible applicants include such organizations as literary centers, libraries, museums, colleges and universities, art centers, historical societies, arts councils, tribal governments, humanities councils, literary festivals, and arts organizations. Applicant organizations must partner with a library (if the applicant organization itself is not a library), and must select one of the twenty-seven available book titles or one of the three available poetry books. Edna McConnell Clark Foundation
The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation helps young people, ages 9 to 24, from low-income backgrounds become independent, productive adults in three ways: improving educational skills and academic achievement; preparing for the world of work and making the transition to employment and economic self-sufficiency; and avoiding high-risk behaviors such as drug abuse, violence, and teen pregnancy. Rather than design initiatives or programs itself, the Foundation works to develop and expand a pool of organizations that can serve thousands more youth each year with programs that produce these outcomes. It focuses solely on high-performing organizations and believes that making significant, long-term, financial investments in them (coupled with extra-financial supports) is an efficient and effective way to meet the urgent needs of low-income youth. The Foundation holds itself accountable for significantly increasing the number of low-income young people benefiting from proven services, and for helping to develop stronger, sustainable organizations that serve low-income youth on a significant scale. Recognizing that young people are most at risk when they are not in school or at home, the Foundation focuses primarily on organizations that deliver services and programming outside school hours. Eligible applicants include: stand-alone 501(c)(3) organization with a history of service to young people. Although the foundation is not accepting proposals from individual organizations, it does invite organizations to complete its Youth Organizations Survey. Based on an organization's responses, the foundation will determine whether it should take a closer look at the organization's programs, leadership, and overall operations.

The mission of the Cultural Support Grants Program is to foster excellence and diversity in art and culture for all the people in the State of Florida. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation Institutional Grants Program
The Academy Foundation, the educational and preservation wing of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is accepting applications from film-related nonprofit organizations, schools, and colleges for its Institutional Grants Program. The grants program is designed to fulfill one of the Academy's fundamental purposes - to foster educational activities between the public and the film industry, and to encourage an appreciation of the motion picture as an art form and a vocation. The Academy Grants Committee considers all applications that represent programs that foster appreciation and excellence in film-making, within the following guidelines: grants are not awarded to cover the expenses of producing a film or films; grants are not awarded to support activities related to the completion of a doctoral dissertation or other academic advancement; grants are not awarded to commercial institutions or organizations, or to individuals pursuing activities related to their employment by profit-making organizations; grants are not awarded to film festivals (the academy has a separate Festival Grants Program); grants are not awarded for support of administrative, equipment, or overhead expenses; and grants are not awarded to cover the expenses involved in television research and projects. Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program
The Department of Community Affairs (DCA) announces anticipated funding availability under the Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Subject to the receipt of funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Department will allocate an estimated $17.6 million of Federal Fiscal Year 2008 funding for Commercial Revitalization, Housing Rehabilitation and Neighborhood Revitalization projects. In addition, approximately $138,779 will be available for Planning and Design Specifications grants. In order to be eligible to apply in these categories, applicants cannot have an open grant in any of the three program categories. Eligible applicants include: non-entitlement cities with fewer than 50,000 residents and counties with fewer than 200,000 residents, or cities that opt out of an urban entitlement program. Application deadline: September 29, 2008.

Resources for Tough Economy

I've recently received emails from people looking for grants that aren't, well, typical. By and large, grants are for non-profit organizations. But it seems that everyone is trying to make ends meet, and it is getting harder and harder, so people are looking for creative solutions. (I've even published a book of my short stories in addition to Fifty Funders and Simply: Grant Writing - see sidebar.)

While I'm always glad to help when I can, I've found myself out of options or at least not the best resource for some who have contacted me. So I decided to put together this rather unusual list.

1. Grants for Individuals

If you are an individual artist, you may be in luck. Grants do exist to assist artists (dancers, writers, visual artists, musicians), but most of these go to established artists with a body of work and positive reviews.

Otherwise, if you are looking for assistance due to a medical condition, you need to contact your church, your commissioner, possibly your consulate if you are from or in another country, or your human resources director if you work for a large company. These options may lead to a fundraiser on your behalf or some discretionary funds. Another option is the local branch of the national organization that deals with a particular type of condition (American Cancer Society, for instance), which may be able to provide additional information.

2. Scholarships

Many people are changing fields, and some may have to go back to school. The best place to start is the Financial Aid office of the school you want to attend. Get to know this staff well, ask about Pell Grants, grants for your particular course of study, loans, work options (part-time, on campus, co-op, etc.), fellowships. The Small Business Administration does not offer grants for small businesses, despite all those ads on television. However, if you own a small research or technological firm, search http://www.sbir.gov/ to find competitive bid options for small businesses. The Small Business Administration does offer loans, training, and other types of assistance for small businesses. You may also sometimes find local grants such as Mom and Pop grants offered through your local commissioners. Rare grants exist for women owned businesses, minority owned businesses, or limited types of industries. Companies in the education field might try the Department of Education.

The Bernice Barbour Foundation is a private charity established by the
late Bernice Wall Barbour. It is a trust to be used for preservation,
care, and prevention of cruelty to animals in the United States. Final
determination of grant applicant funding is the sole discretion of the

501(c)(3) for at least one year prior to August 10, 2008
Benefit animals in the United States
No governmental agencies (local, county, state or federal)
All criteria must have been met for at least one year
Sanctuaries which do not own their land and facility and do not adopt out or release more animals than are residents for more than one year will not

Provide the animal with the opportunity to lead a natural life and then

An initiative of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the Furthermore program supports nonfiction book publishing about the city; natural and historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public issues.

The program seeks work that appeals to an informed general audience; gives evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production; promises a reasonable shelf life; might not otherwise achieve top quality or even come into being; and "represents a contribution without which we would be the poorer."

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations. Grant recipients have included civic and academic institutions, museums, independent and university presses, and professional societies. Trade publishers and public agencies may apply for grants in partnership with an eligible nonprofit sponsor. Applications from individuals are not accepted.

Grants range from $500 to approximately $15,000 each and may support writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography, illustration, and printing and binding.

The Nestle Very Best in Youth Program, sponsored by Nestlé USA, honors young people (ages 13 to 18) who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. The young people, selected from nominations from volunteers, parents, and teachers, will be featured in a special publication and honored at a black-tie ceremony in Los Angeles in July 2009. The American Humane Association recognizes that animal shelters, rescue groups, and animal care and control agencies are seeing more animal victims of the economic downturn and the housing foreclosure crisis. To help ease the current hardship, American Humane is offering grants to its member organizations to help animal victims of foreclosures in need of immediate assistance. The program's emphasis is on keeping pets with their families whenever possible. Therefore, extra consideration will be given to cases where families receive assistance in caring for their pets and in keeping their pets until new housing can be found. These expenses include, but are not limited to, pet deposits for rental housing; behavior training; veterinary expenses (vaccinations, spay/neuter, other vet care); public awareness campaigns to get the word out regarding the issue; and boarding costs to keep pets until owners can reclaim them. Grants may also be awarded to agencies who are trying to re-home these pets. These expenses include, but are not limited to, boarding costs; behavior training to get a pet companion ready; veterinary expenses; and foster care expenses. To be considered for the Foreclosure Pets Grant, an organization must be a nonprofit agency approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) entity, or be a public (local government) entity; be a member of American Humane; and operate and be located within the United States of America or its territories. The grant program is only for nonprofit animal welfare agencies (private or public), and not to individuals, businesses, or corporations. Funding may be requested up to a maximum of $2,000. Miami Based Choreographer Awarded 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography

Brazilian choreographer Augusto Soledade has been awarded the 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship in choreography in the Latin American Caribbean category through the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship program.

Augusto Soledade is the Artistic Director of Brazz Dance Theater, a Miami based dance company that blends Afro-Brazilian and contemporary dance, and an Assistant Professor in Dance at Florida International University also in Miami. The fellowship represents a prestigious acknowledgment of Mr. Soledade’s artistic accomplishments in choreography and an important support for his next choreographic project Dreaming Amazonia.

Dreaming Amazonia is a new choreographic project conceived and choreographed by Augusto Soledade. This new work will investigate the current state of the Amazon forest in Brazil in order to understand it as a natural living environment for indigenous communities, and to juxtapose it to the natural living environment for city dwellers. Dreaming Amazonia will draw on the specific characteristics of these particular settings to create theatrical tension and imagery that will invite viewers to establish personal relationships and associations with the choreography. The main objective of this new work is not to establish a judgmental analysis, but to represent through dance complex and universal realities in the urban versus rural dichotomy. In particular, the work will focus on our relationship with various living environments, and the potential to transform ourselves and our surroundings as a result of our interaction with the world. Dreaming Amazonia will gather artists of various art forms and backgrounds. In Music, Cuban-American composer Orlando Garcia will create the original score to accompany the choreography. Jacek Kolasinski is the video artist, from Poland, who will make contributions to the project creating an installation at the performance site that audience members can interact with before and after the show, and that echoes the strong transformation element present in the choreography. Additionally, Dreaming Amazonia is currently being considered for commission through the Miami Made Program by the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The premiere of Dreaming Amazonia is scheduled for April 2009.
Other organizations that have committed funds for this project are the Funding Arts Network through the 2008 Community Arts Group Grant, and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs through the Cultural Support Grant.

Grants Available for Families Struggling with Child Health-Related Costs
The UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation has announced that new grants are available to help children who need critical health care treatment, services, or equipment not covered or not fully covered by their parents' health benefit plans.
UHCCF provides grants to families to help pay for child health care services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy sessions, prescriptions, and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, orthotics, and eyeglasses.
Parents and legal guardians may apply for grants of up to $5,000 each for child medical services and equipment by completing an online application at the UHCCF Web site.
To be eligible for grants, children must be 16 years of age or younger. Families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States, and be covered by a commercial health benefit plan.

The Bureau anticipates that approximately 1,250,000 will be available to support this competition. ECA/PE/C/CU expects to fund approximately two to four projects under this competition in FY-2008. MIAMI’S MIXED-ABILITY DANCE TROUPE

PERFORMS IN MIAMI AND PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO
Peterson Dancers 18th Season in Miami

Karen Peterson’s Dance Troupe presents “Future Memories” at the Excello dance space in April and then travel to Montenegro in May to perform at the Montenegrin National Theatre and teach at the youth disability center in the capital, Podgorica. This is the second part on a Miami / Montenegro Cultural Exchange Project that began with performances by the Ballo Dance Company in Miami in October 2007.

Ms. Peterson’s three wheelchair and four non- wheelchair dancers will premier “Future Memories”, a multi-media work that finds an intimate connection between her dancers and Ms. Peterson’s immediate family. Through the inspiration of home videos, sing-a-long songs, family arguments and finger painting, Ms. Peterson finds the struggles, passion and support of the family similar to that of her dance company.

The four performances will take place on:
Friday, April 25th at 8 PM
Saturday, April 26th at 4PM and at 8 PM
Sunday April 27th at 4 PM

The purpose of Miami NICE Project is to assist small faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) and non-profit organizations in acquiring and developing the skills and tools needed to increase their efficiency; improve their sustainability and effectiveness; and prepare them as collaborators. Miami NICE is funded as an intermediary agency through the Compassion Capital Fund (CCF) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration of Children and Families. The CCF, created in 2002, is a key component of President Bush’s faith-based and community initiative. CCF helps FBCOs to increase their effectiveness and enhance their ability to provide social services by building their organizational capacity. CCF works through intermediary organizations, such as Miami NICE, that serve as a bridge between the Federal government and FBCOs. Intermediary organizations provide capacity building in the form of technical assistance, training and sub-awards.

Reader's Digest Foundation
The Reader's Digest Foundation has announced that it will donate a total of $1 million to non-profit organizations through a new initiative called "Make it Matter." Grants will be inspired by individuals who are taking action and giving back to their communities in significant ways. Every month, the foundation will select one individual's story of good deeds done and grant $100,000 to a nonprofit organization in honor of that individual. Reader's Digest magazine will then feature that person in its new column, "Make it Matter." Submissions for "Make it Matter" will be accepted by the foundation on a rolling basis throughout 2008.

Local Store Grants Program
Target Corporation's Local Store Grants provide funding support to Target communities in the areas of arts, reading programs, and family violence prevention. To be eligible, organizations must be located in communities where Target does business. Grants will be awarded to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, schools, libraries, or public agencies for nonprofit programs that impact arts, early childhood reading, or family violence prevention. Arts grants are awarded to programs that bring the arts to schools or make the arts accessible to children and families. Early childhood reading grants support programs that foster a love of reading and encourage children, from birth through age nine, to read together with their families. Family violence prevention grants support programs that strengthen families and communities by keeping them safe. Support will be awarded for projects or programs. The mission of the Staples Foundation for Learning, Inc.

To be eligible for consideration, the applicant organizations must have tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and align with the Staples Foundation for Learning's mission and focus on job skills and education.
The requested amount of each grant can be up to $25,000. Most grants awarded by the foundation are in the $5,000 to $25,000 range.
Grant decisions will be made three times a year. Moyer Foundation - 2008 Camp Erin Program
The Moyer Foundation has as its mission to offer encouragement, comfort, and support to children enduring a time of profound distress whether physical, emotional, or financial and to provide opportunities for enhancing their overall wellness, stability, and quality of life. In 2002, the Moyer Foundation created Camp Erin, a bereavement camp for grieving children. The foundation is now working to establish Camp Erin bereavement camps in every Major League Baseball city. To date eighteen camps have been established in twelve states. The Moyer Foundation invites proposals for the 2008 Camp Erin Program. The foundation will fund ten organizations across the United States with $100,000 each to establish and run a Camp Erin bereavement camp. Camp Erin, a bereavement camp for children between the ages of 6 and 17 who have experienced the death of a loved one, is a weekend-long experience filled with traditional camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support facilitated by grief professionals and trained volunteers. The Agricultural Marketing Service provides competitive grant funds for direct producer-to-consumer marketing opportunity projects that address issues related to farmers markets roadside stands, community supported agriculture programs, and other direct producer-to consumer marketing channels. A clarification to the Kresge application process.

The Kresge Foundation is a private foundation that supports communities by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations in six particular fields of interest: health, the environment, arts and culture, education, human services and community development.

Organizations that are currently in the process of completing full proposals have until March 31, 2008 to submit their proposals. Organizations that have not begun the application process but are planning to submit a new application are encouraged to first submit a Letter of Intent. This will be a requirement beginning April 1, 2008. Letters of Intent are accepted year round and reviewed throughout the year.

Knight Arts Partnership
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the Knight Arts Partnership, a $60 million initiative to support the arts in South Florida. The initiative has two parts: three large grants totaling $20 million to the Miami Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Arts in North Miami, and the New World Symphony; and a community challenge through which the foundation will commit $20 million over five years as challenge grants to fund innovative ideas in the arts in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The challenge invites ideas from nonprofits,
companies, and individuals, as well as from applicants of all nationalities and ages. Motorola Lincoln Grants
The Motorola Foundation, the philanthropic arm of global communications company Motorola, will partner with the Chicago History Museum to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Camposition, the non-profit multidisciplinary collaborative known to push the boundaries between contemporary performance and activism, launches a campaign to recruit 1000 homosexuals to play a role in an important and historic new production by Michael Yawney. 1000 Homosexuals, commissioned by the Adrienne Arsht Center and produced by the Center in partnership with Camposition, premieres at the Arsht Centers Carnival Studio Theater in November 2008. Yawney's play tells the story of Anita Bryant's 1977 crusade against gay civil rights.

1,000 Homosexuals is a documentary/fantasy/comedy presenting Anita just the way she would want: as a musical Joan of Arc battling a powerful and perverse gay mafia. Due to Anitas concern for her family, she resists taking a stand against a county-wide gay rights ordinance. After she heeds Gods call to take heroic action, Anita pays a heavy price for her stand. The piece bends documentary sources such as government records, newspaper stories and underground gay manifestos into a twisted carnival of 70s-style sex and faith. 1000 Homosexuals raises questions about morality, politics and religion while recounting how one womans attempt to be relevant shaped popular perceptions of gays and lesbians.

The plays premiere this November is timely, immediately following the referendum to amend the Florida State Constitution to define marriage as one man and one woman and do away with civil unions and domestic partnerships. Camposition invites the community to take part in history by becoming one of 1000 homosexuals. Anyone making a minimum $50 tax-deductible contribution will be designated as one of the official 1000 Homosexuals. Supporters do not necessarily need to identify as GLBT; heterosexuals welcome. 1000 Homosexuals will premiere at the Arsht Center in November 2008 and will continue to educate audiences throughout the US and abroad about GLBT history and current issues.

Match refers to a contribution of direct fiscal investments among multiple parties. This component has been established as an incentive for agencies to apply for dollars from other sources that require an applicant to obtain a match (typically a specified percentage of the grant award) from local sources. Written documentation of the match requirement of the other funding source is required as part of the application. Match funds are only to be utilized to bring new or expanded resources to the community, and will not be used to supplant existing or current match funding or to assume the responsibilities of other public entities. “In-kind” match arrangements, while certainly not discouraged, will not be considered as a fundable match under this policy. Match proposals may be made to The Children’s Trust either during the initial funding proposal submission process to the other funder, or after the availability of match funds has been confirmed by the other funder. Awards from The Trust Match Fund will not be granted until confirmation of award from the primary funder, and will be limited to the percent of match required by that funding source. Purpose of the Request for Proposals (RFP)On January 14, 2008, The Children's Trust (The Trust) Board of Directors approved the release of this competitive solicitation for high quality prevention programs. The Children’s Trust invites qualified providers to submit proposals for prevention programs, developed from evidence–based, best practice models that promote developmental assets that focus on the following areas:
Early Child Development (Area I) encompassing cognitive, motor, social/emotional health and development; literacy and school-readiness skills; arts and cultural programming; and maternal/child health and safety for children ages birth to 5 years. These services should prepare children to enter school healthy, socialized and prepared and eager for formal education.
Parenting Skill-building and Support (Area II) Programs as defined by The Children’s Trust, for parents or guardians of all children and youth. The goals of these programs are to enhance parent-child relationships and strengthen families. The programs must be evidence-based best practices or adhere to guiding principles of effective programming in the parenting field. In addition, efforts that focus on increasing parental and community responsibility on behalf of children via advocacy and volunteerism programs are included in this area.
Youth Development (Area III) Programs that serve school-age children with a primary focus on adolescents, encompassing mentoring, social skills, conflict resolution/life skills, physical fitness and recreation, arts and cultural programming to encourage positive youth development and academic achievement, job training, and professional development. In addition, efforts that focus on increasing youth involvement in advocacy on behalf of children’s issues are included in this area.
Addressing health and safety aspects for all areas: Recognizing the integral importance of child health and safety to child development throughout the lifespan, The Children’s Trust seeks to fund prevention programs relevant to children and youth that may include aspects of health education and prevention/wellness. Encompassing broad goals to address the physical and emotional health and wellness of the whole child is encouraged.

Miami-Dade County supports non-profit organizations presenting major annual festivals and special events in Miami-Dade County which have an established reputation for excellence and credibility, are capable of attracting visitors on regional, national and/or international levels, and have a significant and positive impact on the perception of Miami-Dade County as a dynamic cultural community. Organizations are considered in either of two categories: Cultural Organizations and Community Organizations. Founded in 1999, the Creative Capital Foundation ( http://www.creative-capital.org/ ) is a national nonprofit organization that supports artists pursuing adventurous and imaginative work in the performing and visual arts, film/video, innovative literature, and emerging fields. The foundation is committed to working in long-term partnership with the artists it funds, making a multiyear financial commitment, and providing advisory services and professional development assistance along with financial support. Funded artists agree to share a small percentage of any net profits generated by their projects with Creative Capital, which applies those funds toward new grants.
In 2008, Creative Capital will support artists in Emerging Fields, Innovative Literature, and Performing Arts. Emerging Fields may include digital arts, gaming, sound art, architecture, design, interdisciplinary projects, and new genres. Innovative Literature may include poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and genre-defying liter- ary work. Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida
The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, Inc. works to enhance access to quality health-related services for Floridians, with a particular focus on the uninsured and underserved. The Blue Foundation board of directors has identified community-based health clinics and outreach services as a priority focus for the foundation's grantmaking. The greatest percentage of the Blue Foundation funding will be to identify, nurture, and sustain such activities to benefit uninsured and underserved populations. The foundation awards up to $2 million annually in grants during two proposal cycles in the summer and winter. Requests will generally be considered for proposals of all sizes from $10,000 up to $100,000 each. The community challenge of the Knight Arts Partnership will pair $20 million from Knight Foundation with $20 million in matching funds to come from other sources. It is open to any artistic individual or art institution in South Florida.
Said Ibargüen: “Because we are looking for big, exciting and new ideas, we have made the process as easy and open as possible. There are only three rules: the ideas must be about art, the projects must take place in South Florida, and the idea must find funding to match Knight Foundation’s commitment.”

The BCA Ten is a national list created by the Business Committee for the Arts, Inc. to recognize businesses of all sizes for their exceptional involvement with the arts. The Motorola Foundation will provide funding for Innovation Generation Grants to organizations that engage K-12 students and teachers in the U.S. in innovation, science, technology, engineering, and math. More Kids in the Woods Program
This agency-wide Forest Service call for proposals for "More Kids in the Woods" projects is part of a continuing effort to improve childrens’ health by reconnecting them with nature. Projects need to engage non-federal partners with at least a 1:1 match. Matching contributions may be in-kind or cash. Award ceiling: $500,000. Project proposals must be submitted to a Forest Service office or field unit by February 15, 2008.

Cat Network Offers Discounted Spay/Neuter Certificates

Cat Network, Inc. has long offerer $25 certificates to spay or neuter cats at participating veterinarians. Through a recent grant award, they are able to offer discounted certificates.

"We are still offering $10 certificates through a grant CN received from
Florida Animal Friend (spay/neuter license plate sales). The purchaser has
to show proof of Medicaid, food stamps, WIC, or Jackson Health, and they may
purchase certificates until CN utilizes all the money from this grant. If
someone has any of the above forms of assistance, they can mail a copy of
their card along with their certificate request; the order will be filled at the
lower cost if funds are available."

Unfortunately, grant funds that allowed for "buy 2 get 1 free" matching certificates for the $25 certificates have run out. However, as Miami-Dade County has recently ended its free spay/ neuter program, this is one of the most cost effective means of spaying strays and adoptable cats.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Grants to Aid Children
Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC)and its global network of local RMHC Chapters provide grants and program services designed to make an immediate, positive impact on children in need around the world. RMHC provides grants to nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations whose national or global programs help improve the health and well-being of children. Organizations seeking funding should have a specific program that directly improves the health and well-being of children; addresses a significant funding gap or critical opportunity; has long-term impact in terms of replication or reach; and produces measurable results. Organizations seeking funding should have a broad base of funding support, management capacity to effectively execute the project, and a clear, concise plan for project evaluation with outcome measurement. An applicant must be designated a not-for-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization. U.S. charities must have a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status letter on file with the Internal Revenue Service. The RMHC board of trustees is most interested in national or international organizations that have a specific program related to children's health and well-being. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for the 2008 National Preservation Honor Awards. The coveted annual awards recognize singular success in preserving, rehabilitating, restoring or interpreting America's architectural and cultural heritage. Coming Up Taller Awards to Honor After-School and Out-of-
School Arts and Humanities Programs
Deadline: January 31, 2008
The Coming Up Taller Awards ( http://www.cominguptaller.org/ ) annually recognize and reward excellence in afterschool and out- of-school arts and humanities programs for underserved children and youth in the United States.
The awards support afterschool and out-of-school programs that are tangible examples of the power of the arts and the humanities to encourage young people's creativity and to provide them with learning opportunities, chances to contribute to their community, and ways to take responsibility for their own futures.
Programs initiated by museums, libraries, performing arts organi- zations, universities, colleges, arts centers, community service organizations, schools, businesses, and eligible government enti- ties are encouraged to consider participating.
All programs must be nominated, although self-nominations are accepted. Programs must have been operational since January 2004 for a minimum of five years, including 2008. Organizations must be nonprofit and tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Inter- nal Revenue Code, a unit of state or local government, or a federally recognized tribal community.
Fifteen award recipients will receive $10,000 each, an individ- ualized plaque, and an invitation to attend the annual Coming Up Taller Leadership Enhancement Conference.

The Multi-Arts (MAP) Production Fund ( http://www.mapfund.org/ ), a program of Creative Capital ( http://www.creative-capital.org/ ), supported by the Rockefeller Foundation ( http://rockfound.org/ ), seeks to assist artists who "are exploring the dynamics of live- performance within our changing society, thus reflecting our culture's innovation and growing diversity."
In keeping with the mandate of its founding organization, the Rockefeller Foundation, MAP seeks to support work that brings insight to the issue of cultural difference, be that in class, gender, generation, ethnicity, or tradition. MAP guidelines place a special emphasis on innovation, cross-cultural collaboration, and art that springs from cultural critique.
Applications for MAP support must come from U.S.-based organiza- tions that have current nonprofit 501(c)(3) status. Nonprofit artist-services organization may apply as fiscal sponsors on behalf of unincorporated artists or ensembles. Both the organiza- tion and the artists involved in a project must have a two-year history of professional activity. The fund supports only artistic projects that contain or will contain a live-performance compo- nent. Support may be applied to any phase of a project, up to and including its premiere run. The touring of completed projects is not eligible for MAP funding. MAP is especially interested in providing support for work early in its development.
Up to forty awards ranging from $10,000 to $45,000 each will be made. The average award amount is $22,000.

DATE: December 27, 2007
TO: ALL PROSPECTIVE RESPONDENTS
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP) NO. HPF0708
This addendum becomes a part of RFP No. HPF0708 titled: “Historic Preservation
Fund Guidelines and Application Forms FY 2007-2008.”
1. The deadline for submitting the submittals has been extended to April 25, 2008
by 2:00 pm. The location in which the submittals are to be delivered remains the
same.
2. The deadline to submit questions in writing has been extended until March
28, 2008.
The other dates listed in the RFP will be shifting accordingly based on the extension of
the submittal deadline. The second addendum to this RFP will provide answers to the
questions received at the pre-submittal conference and any we have received in writing.
We are preparing an agenda item for our Board’s consideration that if approved will
impact this RFP and that is the reason for the two changes listed above.

The Academy Foundation, the educational and preservation wing of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, distributes through its Institutional Grants Program funding to film-related nonprofit organizations, schools, and colleges. Academy Institutional Grants are awarded only to nonprofit film organizations and to film programs within schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions and nonprofit organizations. Typical award amounts range from $5,000 to $15,000 per institution. Funds are not awarded directly to individuals engaged in the performing arts, or to cover the expenses of developing scripts, producing films, or funding educational expenses of any kind; nor are funds awarded to film festivals.
